What Will a Trip to Egypt Cost?

Wondering what will a trip to Egypt cost?

You’ll be happy to know that Egypt is a very affordable country.  I chose to do travel around Egypt on a budget, but there are a lot of different options depending on how much you want to spend.  The “budget” tour that I took was actually quite comfortable as I was given a private tour guide and a private driver.  So, if you are looking for an alternative to the tour bus crowd, then consider doing a budget private tour.  Keep on reading if you want to know what will a trip to Egypt Cost as I break down what it cost me.

IS EGYPT SAFE?

Egypt has been the country that I have been asked the most questions about.  The number one question I get: “IS IT SAFE?”  I asked the same thing many times in different Facebook travel groups and every single reply was YES.  And I am happy to report that I never once felt unsafe in Egypt.  To me, it was no different than traveling through Israel, Jordan, or Turkey.  There are normal precautions that you take, like making sure you have a contact in the country (which I did through the tour company), not going out alone at night, and following any other normal safety protocols while traveling.  Had I not been so nervous to travel there in the beginning I would have probably stayed three weeks instead of one.   There is still so much that I have yet to see so I know a trip back to Egypt is in my future.

WHAT TOUR COMPANY DID I USE?

I found a tour company advertising through airbnb and after a few weeks of searching and negotiating a price, I went with this tour company because they were the most responsive to all my questions, the cheapest, and were willing to be flexible with my toddler’s schedule.  I couldn’t have chosen a better company as it was staffed with private tour guides, private drivers, and really friendly staff that are with you every step of the way.  Whenever I needed anything such as a sim card or a ride to the grocery store, they were there for me without hesitation or delay! It was such a great experience, which is why I highly recommend them.

WOULD YOU TAKE A TODDLER TO EGYPT?

YES! My son loved riding camels around the pyramids, he loved being on the cruise ship and swimming in the pool on the top deck as we watched the scenery pass by.  He really enjoyed playing with all the rocks at the temple ruins and running through the passages and rooms.  I would recommend going during low season as there aren’t so many people and you can freely let your toddler roam without fear of losing him in a crowd.

What Will a Trip to Egypt Cost:

1-week budget tour through Mohammed Fawzy Travel Master: $534
His website: click here
2 Nights in Cairo pyramid view hotel/Airbnb (meals excluded) To see photos click here
3 Nights on a 5 Star Nile Cruise (all meals included) –our ship was called MS Zeina, there are photos on google.
2 Nights on a first-class overnight train (There and back –which saved on 2 nights of accommodation) –this wasn’t a sleeper train..just regular seats.

When trying to determine your budget and how much will a trip to Egypt cost, it’s important to note that the prices I spent were lower because:
1. I went during the low season (September) while it was still pretty hot.
2. Because I found another company who quoted me that price and Mohamed said he would beat any competitor’s quote as long as it was for the same exact services.  I’m glad he did because I think his company offered way better service than the other company I was going to go with.

I should also note that the Egyptian Government doesn’t allow tourists to use 1st class night trains anymore –they have to buy an $80 sleeper train (trying to gouge more money out of tourists) and that has to be paid in USD.  But the easiest way to travel for sure is by plane and if you book your domestic flights well in advance they might even be cheaper than the sleeper train.

Camel Ride around the Pyramids:
$68 (Negotiated down from $120) by convincing the camel owner that I wasn’t the typical holiday tourist, that I was a single mom traveling on a budget.

Diapers/Wipes:
$9

Food:
$64

Entrance Fees: (Museums, Monuments, Temples in Cairo, Aswan, and Luxor)
$75

Tipping: (Guides, drivers, Cruise staff, and anyone who provided any sort of service –Egypt has a culture of tipping known as backsheesh)
$100

TOTAL:
$850
Flight From Izmir, Turkey $300.

I hope these numbers help you determine your budget and give you an idea of what will a trip to Egypt cost. Since traveling to Egypt in 2017 two other couples I know have personally used the same tour company I went with and their reviews are glowing as well.

Did you buy souvenirs? Gifts for yourself and baby? If so, what are some unique gifts and worth the buy?

      Hi Ducle,
I didn’t buy anything from Egypt –mostly because we were only there a week and didn’t get the chance to visit the giant open market in Cairo –something I definitely want to do next time. I’m very picky on what I actually buy as a souvenir because I have such limited space –also, i’m aware that most of the souvenirs are really just made in China or India –even if they say “Made in Egypt”. The only countries where I bought souvenirs were Morocco –I couldn’t leave without 5 Moroccan rugs and some cute camel toys for Matteo. I wish I would have bought something in Istanbul but everything I wanted was made of glass and the only day I had to ship things home was a holiday there so the post office and even the grand bazaar was closed.. It was a real bummer. I bought a lot of cute fabric wall hangings from Bali — each one was less than $15 and I couldn’t resist –they also were very light weight. I’ve seen similar fabric for sale in home decor shops in the U.S. and Europe and they start at $75+ .
